Breaking News: Ollie's Big Night

Oliver slept through the night for the first time last night...a relative term in baby-land, of course. In this case it was 11 PM to 5.30 AM, not shabby at all.

It did Mommy and Daddy no good, as we were up most of the night with a feverish Logan (we feared flu but are now thinking cold). In fact, I think Oliver slept in because we were not present to pounce on him the moment he started crying (he was in his own room, whereas he's normally in our room with us).

We'll see how tonight goes with both of them.

Days of the Week

Logan's class is working on days of the week. At home this evening it played out like this.

Logan, what day is it today?

Green!

(Must not laugh. Must not laugh.)
OK. Um...what month is it?

Janvery!

Right! What is your favorite day?

(Pause for serious thought.) Frivay!

Mommy's favorite day is Friday, too! What day is it today?

MondayToosay

Well, what comes after those days?

(Pause for serious thought.) Go see Daddy now.

Big Boy

Oliver Bills: 15 lbs. 1 oz. and excellent oxygen readings. And yet...still waking Mommy up every two hours during the night. Oh, Ollie!

The Delicate Foot of a Parrot

I've made it a policy rarely to share work-related stuff on this blog. But I think it helps set up some context for my day-to-day existence to provide little snippets from the Bulldog world.

Here is a classic example: An e-mail reply to my request for access to a new review site we've set up. My request was pretty basic. Nine times out of 10, the response would have been equally basic (yes, no, yes with conditions).

Every once in a while, though, a gem like this has me laughing for the rest of the day and deeply concerned I will never again work with people quite as funny.

My e-mail: "Love (it.) As a "client," I will get to experience this, right?"

Reply from project owner: I thought for you in particular we’d actually print out each page, attach it to the delicate foot of a local wild parrot and have it fly over you and drop it with a few words of affirmation.

One, Two, Three and Dip...

Sheesh! Next time I flub a line during a presentation or pitch, I'm not going to beat myself up over it. I'm going to follow the model of the chief justice and the new president, who, I assume, are not obsessing over their "foxtrot all over the oath of office" this morning.

Frankly, I don't care if they danced a tango...as long as it's valid.

The Cowboy Cooking Kid

Logan received his first autograph today. We went to a book signing at Book People for a new book by Robb Walsh, who is a Texas cookbook author and the daddy of our friend/co-worker Katie.

We actually did not buy the new book, but instead bought one I've had my eye on for a while: The Texas Cowboy Cookbook. It's kind of a cowboy history with lots of mouth-watering recipes thrown in. Best of all, our copy is signed "To Logan: The Cowboy Cooking Kid."

Jelly Kiss

"Logan. what do you want for breakfast?"

"A sandwich. No pictures, mommy!"

This particular sandwich was "turn butter" (translation: almond butter that Daddy "turns" the top on to open and close) and "MY jelly" (translation: all jelly within a 50-mile radius).

Brothers at Play

Logan's sweetness really bubbles up when he's with Oliver, particularly during tummy time. Clearly Logan does not remember how much he hated tummy time! "It's OK, baby Ollie."

Room for two. The triangle rattle all the way on the lower right is a favorite of Ollie's, as it was for Logan. No idea if this is nature or nurture.

Logan Sets the Table

One of our goals for the new year is to eat dinner together (with Oliver in his bouncy seat next to us if he's awake) at least six nights a week. This idea, which we implemented in December, came about for two reasons:

A. Research such as this.

B. We've been noticing for several months that Logan eats more, and in a more organized fashion, when he's with Wills, GHP or JK, or with family during holiday time. Peer pressure.

So far we've had mixed results. More often than not, dinnertime finds us struggling to get him to the table, then alternately begging him to eat (success rate: one time in 20) or ignoring him in hopes he will stop fooling around and put some food in his mouth (success rate: one time in five). He likes the idea of eating, and often cheerfully announces that "we're eating!" But actual consumption of food is a toss-up. We give him what we're having, unless it's too spicy/weird (and having been subjected to numerous servings of curry and babotie as a pre-teen...thanks, Dad!...my bar for "weird" is very low).

I hope this is a toddler phase and he doesn't become one of those people who only eats like four things.

Regardless of his performance at the table, Logan does love to set the table. Here is what a Logan-set table looks like.

24 for 2009

This is an inspiring list I think we can all manage (except for the green tea...ugh). I'm not sure I can swing #2 (Logan considers "Mommy needs to go to the bathroom" an invitation, not a deterrent) and I take issue with the rhyming in #24. But overall, good stuff for the new year. Thanks, R!

1. Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant.

2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day. Buy a lock if you have to.

3. When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement, 'My purpose is to __________ today.'

4. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.

5. Drink green tea and plenty of water. Eat blueberries, wild Alaskan salmon, broccoli, and almonds.

6. Try to make at least three people smile each day.

7. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip, energy vampires, issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.

8. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.

9 Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

10. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

11. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

12. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

13. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.

14. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

15. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

16. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: 'In five years, will this matter?'

17. Forgive everyone for everything.

18. What other people think of you is none of your business.

19. God heals everything.

20. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

21. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

22. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

23. Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements: I am thankful for __________. Today I accomplished _________.

24. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.

A Quick and Boring New Year's FAQ

Did you go out for New Year's Eve?
Uh, no. We stayed home and watched Dark Knight. I fell asleep at 10.30 and could not even be roused at midnight. What can I say, it's been a long year.

What did you do on New Year's Day?
We went to a lovely open house at our friends' new house. It was low-key, kid-friendly and a good way to start the year.

Do you have New Year's resolutions?
No.

Are you making anything from a Rachel Ray cookbook for New Year's night dinner?
Why, yes! Yes, we are. We're making one of our faves, chicken tostadas. We've never made them for Logan so we're going to see what he thinks. I highly recommend these. Recipe here.

These are incredibly easy and delicious and lend themselves to lots of variety. You can change up the meat (pork instead of chicken) and/or the salsa (red instead of green), the cheeses and the veggies. Make them the official way first, though, they are pretty good.
